Everyone remembers the magic of their first favorite book — the story that made them fall in love with reading, or the moment someone special read aloud to them. Your first book helped shape who you are. Now, you can give that gift to a new generation.
Help Colorado kids fall in love with reading and join Reach Out and Read Colorado this Colorado Gives Day to promote early literacy, family connectivity, and a joy of reading for the kids in your community. Reading aloud with a loved one in the early years prepares a child for a lifetime of success.
Reading aloud together can change everything – $36 starts a child’s learning journey in their first year of life.
"Reach Out and Read has made a significant difference to my patients by not only enhancing their literacy skills but also fostering a sense of curiosity, imagination, and connection through the joy of reading. My clinic's favorite books to give to patients are 'What If' and 'I Love You to the Moon and Back' because they inspire wonder, imagination, and heartfelt connections between children and their caregivers, promoting meaningful bonding moments and fostering a love for reading from an early age."

To improve school readiness and social-emotional skills through trusted literacy guidance and reading together.
Beginning as a national movement in Boston, MA in 1989, Reach Out and Read was developed as a collaboration among doctors and early childhood educators who examined empirical evidence of developmental discrepancies among low-income children not exposed to books at an early age. These disparities persist and perpetuate throughout life, creating a debilitating cycle of poverty, toxic stress, and negative health outcomes. Reach Out and Read was implemented as a proactive intervention to remove and reform systemic inequities in health and literacy through emphasizing the importance of families reading together when an infant's brain development is at its most formative stage.
In 1997 the national movement spread to Colorado with clinics signing on to the Reach Out and Read program. Reach Out and Read Colorado now operates in 334 medical offices throughout ethnically and geographically diverse regions in all of Colorado's 64 counties, providing direct program service to children at 338,000 well-child visits each year.
Reach Out and Read prepares Colorado's youngest children to succeed in school and throughout their lives by partnering with pediatricians to 'prescribe' books and encourage families to spend quality time reading aloud together.
