This is my fourth Colorado Gives Day and I can't imagine a world where I'm not passionately talking about why our work matters. This year, it's about Colby in her PJs picking out a book from her overflowing shelf at bedtime. Sometimes it's Frozen books (because let's face it, for us, it's not a trend but a lifestyle) and other nights lately it's been Llama's Couch, Teo's Tutu, and Swim Jim (local author!). The point is, she has plenty of choices and has had that opportunity since her first book (if you're wondering - Giraffes Can't Dance at Rose Medical Center). The access and opportunities, or lack of there of, for kids is a pivotal piece that sets the stage for school readiness. Those same shared reading moments that impact language development impact bonding and attachment, arguably one of the most important factors for how we function as adults. If you're thinking that it sounds simple that a book can do all that, it's because it is. The simple yet consistent act of reading together in a child's earliest years builds brains and strong bonds. As you consider where you might donate during this season of giving, I would be honored if would consider us so a few more kids can have jam packed bookshelves and full hearts at bedtime this year.

Won't you join me in supporting Reach Out and Read Colorado this Colorado Gives Day?

Your donation will help support Reach Out and Read Colorado as we partner with pediatricians throughout the state to 'prescribe' high quality books and provide guidance for parents/caregivers at more than 290,000 well-child visits this year.

Reach Out and Read Colorado’s program not only provides underserved families with books to build home libraries, but it also promotes learning and skill building for both parents and children. The simple act of unplugging and reading a book together is proven to increase brain and language development, create strong parent-child connections, and improve kindergarten readiness— And when a child is set up for success from an early age, the possibilities and opportunities are endless!

Thank you so much for considering a donation to Reach Out and Read Colorado during Colorado Gives Day! Your support means so much to children across Colorado.
