At DJP, our mission is to radically transform the criminal legal system through intersectional advocacy that fosters safe and healthy communities in and around the Denver Metro Area. We achieve this by providing comprehensive systems navigation for individuals and families unjustly impacted by the criminal legal system. Our work bridges the gap between legal assistance and personal trauma recovery, offering a holistic model of support. From the courtroom to the community, we collaborate directly with attorneys, legal personnel, impacted family members, community support networks, and other key stakeholders to ensure just outcomes while addressing the trauma and instability that often accompany these legal challenges. Through this approach, we are committed to driving systemic change and building a more just society.

DJP was born out of a personal need for accountability and healing after first-hand experience with law enforcement violence. In 2009, our founder and Executive Director, Alexander Landau was falsely charged after being assaulted by Denver Police. We encourage you to watch this Emmy Award winning animated video featured by StoryCorps, that tells Alexander story and highlights the urgent need for systemic change.

📞 $25 provides one hour of trauma-informed, over-the-phone systems navigation support for families and individuals, reducing barriers for individuals facing complex legal and bureaucratic challenges.

🫱🏽‍🫲🏾 $50 enables DJP to meet with a new client face-to-face, providing compassionate, trauma-informed onboarding and support as they begin their journey toward justice.

🏛 $100 facilitates organized court support, ensuring that community members facing legal challenges are met with solidarity and a visible, supportive presence during critical moments in court.

⚖️ $250 funds a "Know Your Rights" training and materials, equipping community members with the essential tools and knowledge to confidently assert their rights.

🎉 $500 allows DJP to host community events where policymakers and elected officials engage directly with residents, fostering accountability and trust within the spaces that matter most.

Mission

Denver Justice Project's mission is to radically transform the criminal legal system through intersectional advocacy that fosters safe and healthy communities.

Background Statement

My name is Alexander Landau and I am the Founder and Executive Director of the Denver Justice Project (DJP). DJP was born out of a need for healing and accountability in response to law enforcement violence. Our organization serves as a therapeutic resource for community members impacted by such violence, helping them navigate the legal system and advocate for accountability within police and sheriffs departments.

In 2009, I was falsely charged after being assaulted by Denver Police. Although I pursued civil justice, the officers involved were never held accountable and continued to brutalize others. This experience led me to create DJP to raise awareness of police violence and advocate for systemic change. We continue to support others facing similar injustices, helping them navigate the legal system and seek accountability.
