Mission Statement

By investing in their lives, Forward Steps empowers former foster youth so they can reach their full potential as active, independent, self-sufficient members of their communities.

Organization History

Forward Steps was founded in 2006 and has evolved from a housing model to a scholarship model in 2014 that provides comprehensive support services aimed at alleviating the economic, social and emotional barriers experienced by former foster youth following emancipation. Forward Steps' current service delivery model and program structure are based on the innovative Guardian Scholars Program.

Forward Steps is the only Colorado-based nonprofit organization focused solely on former foster youth and post-secondary education success by addressing both financial and emotional needs. Each element of our program is designed to help students overcome barriers and realize their dreams. Without intervention, this population faces disproportionately higher rates of dependence on public assistance, unemployment, incarceration, substance abuse, pregnancy and homelessness.

Testimonials

"In the Forward Steps' Mentor, I have someone who expects things from me because she believes in me even when I don't have any faith in myself. I know that I'm not alone, I know that she is there if I need a cry, a laugh or a hug." Jackie, current participant

"Thanks to Forward Steps, I know that I still have a support system and someone who will be there to make sure I stay on the right track." Dylan, current participant

"I am grateful for all the programs that support me but none of them take the time to check in with me the way Forward Steps does. Even before I set foot in school, forward steps organized "College Boot Camp" in June for me and the other scholars. At Boot Camp, we were told what to expect in college. I do not know who would've filled that role for me if Forward Steps did not take the time to do this." Current scholar

"Forward Steps took away the worry." Nicole, former participant

"I see this as an opportunity to better myself… I know I can't do it all alone." Yassi, a former participant
