Protecting the Soul of the Borderlands —
For Generations to Come

The story of Southern Colorado’s borderlands is one of endurance, belonging, culture, and deep connection to the land. Yet, these stories — and the people who shaped them — are at risk of being forgotten.

The Salazar Borderlands Fund at Colorado Gives Foundation was created to change that. This permanent endowment will grow over time to ensure that History Colorado’s programs about Southern Colorado — the exhibitions, oral histories, and preservation projects that give voice to this region — will thrive for generations to come.

Founded by Ken and Hope Salazar, the fund honors a legacy that began long before Colorado was a state. The Salazar family’s roots run deep in the San Luis Valley, and their vision is to keep the borderlands’ heritage alive — celebrating the convergence of cultures, histories, and landscapes that define our shared identity.

Now is the time to invest in this future. With Colorado Gives Foundation matching 10% of every gift through December 9th (up to $1 million), your contribution will grow the endowment and magnify its long-term impact.

An endowment gift is more than a donation — it’s a promise. A promise that future generations will know where they come from. That these stories, lands, and legacies will not fade. Join us in building something lasting.

Invest in the Salazar Borderlands Fund — and help the past live powerfully into the future.

A wide range of programming, including lectures, exhibitions, publications, historic preservation, and community engagement opportunities, will connect with multiple audiences.

Site-based programs will take place at the History Colorado Center in Denver as well as History Colorado’s Community Museums around the state, and may also include partner institutions in the region.

Historic artifacts, documents and photographs will be added to the State’s collection, in collaboration with the local community and to be used in exhibitions and other public programming.

Preservation efforts will ensure that historic sites across Colorado’s borderlands will be protected.
