A Newspaper With History. A Newsroom Built for Tomorrow.

The Pueblo Star Journal's story began more than a century ago. For generations, the original newspaper helped document Pueblo's transformation into one of the American West's most important industrial and cultural communities.

The original Star Journal ceased publication in 1983.

In October 2021, the name returned with a new purpose: to build an independent nonprofit newsroom serving Pueblo and Southern Colorado.

Today, the Pueblo Star Journal combines the traditions of local newspaper reporting with digital innovation, investigative journalism, community conversations, podcasts and educational initiatives.

Our mission is not simply to recreate yesterday's newspaper.

  • We're building the newsroom Pueblo needs for tomorrow.
  • A newsroom that listens.
  • A newsroom that investigates.
  • A newsroom that brings people together.
  • And a newsroom that never forgets whom it serves.

Your Community. Your Newsroom. Your Impact.

Every donation makes a difference.

Independent journalism takes time, resources and people committed to following a story wherever the facts lead.

Your contribution supports the essential work of our nonprofit newsroom, including:

  • Investigative and watchdog journalism that examines decisions affecting Pueblo residents.

  • Community reporting that documents important issues, celebrates achievements and elevates local voices.

  • Accessible journalism delivered through print, digital, audio and emerging mobile platforms.

  • Youth storytelling and media literacy through our growing MoJo initiative.

  • Expanded regional coverage to connect more communities throughout Southern Colorado.

Whether you give $10, $25, $100 or more, your donation supports journalism dedicated to the public interest.

And by becoming a monthly donor, you provide the consistent support needed to plan meaningful coverage, investigate complex issues and maintain an independent newsroom throughout the year.

When you support local journalism, you invest in the community where you live.

Be Part of the Story

  • The future of local journalism belongs to all of us.
  • Pueblo deserves a newsroom that asks questions, seeks answers and tells stories with fairness, independence and purpose.
  • A newsroom that understands the importance of local history while looking toward the future.
  • A newsroom that recognizes journalism is more than a business. It is an essential community service.

That's the Pueblo Star Journal we're building.

But we cannot build it alone.

During the 2026 #newsCOneeds campaign, we're inviting readers, neighbors, businesses and everyone who believes in the value of reliable local news to invest in this mission. Your gift, whatever the amount, helps keep independent journalism working for Pueblo.

Because Pueblo Deserves to Know.

Local news is a public good. Help us keep it that way.

Because Pueblo Deserves to Know.

The decisions that shape our city. The stories that connect our neighbors. The questions that need answers. Local news is a public good. Help us keep it that way.

Pueblo, We've Got Your Back.

SUPPORT INDEPENDENT LOCAL JOURNALISM

Why Pueblo Needs Independent Journalism

  • Local news isn't a luxury. It's a public good.
  • When government makes decisions, residents deserve to know what's happening.
  • When families struggle with housing, childcare or the rising cost of living, they deserve reporting that helps them understand the challenges and opportunities facing their community.
  • When Pueblo's artists, entrepreneurs, educators and community leaders accomplish something extraordinary, their stories deserve to be told.
  • And when difficult questions need to be asked, independent journalists must have the resources and freedom to ask them.

That's why the Pueblo Star Journal exists.

We believe journalism should do more than report the news. It should inform, connect, empower and encourage meaningful public dialogue. Since our launch in 2021, we've worked to create a nonprofit service and deliberative newsroom committed to the people of Pueblo and Southern Colorado. We believe everyone deserves access to trustworthy information, regardless of their ability to pay.

No paywalls. No barriers. Just local journalism that works for you.

What Your Support Makes Possible

1. Pueblo Watch: Holding Power Accountable

Good journalism asks questions. Great journalism keeps asking until the public gets answers. Through Pueblo Watch, our newsroom follows local government, public spending, economic development, land use and the decisions shaping Pueblo's future.

Our reporting examines the issues behind the headlines, explains complex public policies and provides residents with information to participate in civic life. Our partnership with SeeGov is helping make local government more accessible through highlights of public meetings and important decisions.

Your gift supports independent reporting that holds public institutions accountable and keeps residents informed.

2. Stories That Connect Our Community

Pueblo is more than a collection of headlines.

It's a community shaped by generations of workers, families, artists, educators, athletes, entrepreneurs and neighbors whose stories deserve to be preserved and shared.

PSJ journalist Molly Cotner received a competitive fellowship from Investigative Reporters & Editors (IREto produce a  series examining the childcare crisis in Pueblo and Southern Colorado. Her reporting explores affordability, access, systemic gaps and the challenges facing working families. This vital investigation would not be possible without the support of IRE, the Pueblo Star Journal and readers like you who believe these stories deserve to be told.

Through projects like Shores of Pueblo, our historical storytelling series, and our ongoing coverage of culture, education, health, business and community life, the PSJ documents the extraordinary character of Southern Colorado.

Our Voices of Pueblo podcasts bring local perspectives into deeper conversations, giving residents an opportunity to hear directly from the people shaping our region. State of Art, 45 Degrees, Bree on a Budget, and Your Voice Your Vote are productions of the Voices of Pueblo podcast.

Your gift helps preserve Pueblo's stories and ensures that more community voices are heard.

3. Journalism Without Barriers

Access to trustworthy local information should never depend on a subscription.

The Pueblo Star Journal provides journalism through free print editions, digital publications, online reporting, podcasts and developing mobile platforms like MyPSJ. We are working to reach audiences across Pueblo County and Southern Colorado, including communities that have historically received limited local news coverage.

Our commitment is simple: Meet people where they are.

Whether someone picks up a newspaper at a PSJ pick-up location, reads an article on a phone or listens to a podcast, reliable local journalism should be within reach.

Your gift helps us bring independent journalism to more people, in more places, through more accessible formats.

4. MoJo: Investing in the Next Generation

The future of local journalism depends on the next generation of storytellers.

Through the Pueblo Star Journal's Mobile Journalism (MoJo) initiative, we're introducing young people to journalism, digital storytelling, media literacy and civic engagement.

MoJo encourages students to explore their communities, ask questions, develop reporting skills and share stories that matter to them. By placing storytelling tools in the hands of young people, we're building more than a journalism program. We're helping develop informed, engaged citizens who understand the value of reliable information and the responsibility that comes with telling a story.

Your gift helps young people discover their voices and become active participants in their communities.
