LOCAL NEWS IS A PUBLIC GOOD

In Pueblo, local news is more than information. It is a public good that strengthens every neighborhood, every family, and every shared future. Like sidewalks and streetlights, dependable journalism keeps our community connected, informed, and safe. It helps us understand one another, hold power accountable, and move forward with clarity and purpose.

This year, the Pueblo Star Journal made a major leap in serving our community. We introduced a new digital edition that falls between our monthly print editions, ensuring Pueblo now receives reliable local news every two weeks. At a time when so many places are losing local reporting altogether, Pueblo is gaining more—because you make it possible.

Your support fuels this progress. It keeps trusted journalism accessible to everyone in our community and allows us to innovate in meaningful ways.

That innovation includes the launch of our Neighborhood News Bureaus, an extension of our MoJo (Mobile Journalism) Bootcamp and Training Program. With MoJo, we empower emerging community journalists to report directly from the sidewalks, parks, neighborhoods, and storefronts where Pueblo’s stories unfold. Hyper-local reporting reconnects us at the block level, restores trust, and ensures that every voice in Pueblo has a place to be heard.

At a moment when misinformation spreads quickly and many cities lose the newsrooms that once held them together, Pueblo is choosing a different path. We are choosing connection. We are choosing accountability. We are choosing each other.

Your investment keeps the lights on for meaningful reporting. It supports youth and community journalists. It protects the vital public good that local news provides.

Support is critical. Together, we can build a stronger, more informed Pueblo—one story, one neighborhood, one edition at a time.

Background Statement

About the Pueblo Star Journal

The Pueblo Star Journal is a nonprofit newspaper rooted in the vibrant history of Pueblo, Colorado. Pueblo’s story is as diverse as its people—in its heyday, our city was home to over 26 daily foreign-language newspapers, reflecting the rich cultural mosaic of our community. For decades, the Star Journal served as Pueblo’s cherished evening newspaper, a staple in homes across the region until it closed in 1983. When we relaunched in 2021, our legacy drew an immediate following from our senior residents, who fondly recalled gathering with family to share stories from its pages.

Today, the Pueblo Star Journal honors that legacy while innovating for the future. We are committed to making local journalism accessible and engaging through our monthly print editions, distributed across 42 pick-up locations, as well as digital content on our website and social media. To reach our younger readers, we’ve introduced the Voices of Pueblo and Pueblo Star Sports podcasts, sharing diverse perspectives and local stories that capture Pueblo’s spirit.

In 2025, we are excited to expand further with a new video broadcast platform in development. Our mission is clear: to connect Pueblo’s past with its present, ensuring that local stories, voices, and news continue to thrive for generations to come.
