SHEATS Initiative

S.H.E.A.T.S. — Sustained Housing, Employment, Accountability, Transportation, and Sponsorship — is Colorado T.E.N.T.’s stabilization program for justice-involved individuals returning to the community. It is built around a simple idea: getting out is an event; becoming stable is a process.

People returning from incarceration are often expected to rebuild several parts of their lives at the same time. They need somewhere safe to live. They need employment and a reliable way to get to work. They need people who will hold them accountable while also helping them navigate problems before those problems become crises. Most importantly, they need enough stability to begin making decisions based on where they want their lives to go rather than what they have to survive today.

Housing is the foundation that makes much of that possible. It is difficult to maintain employment without knowing where you are sleeping. It is difficult to plan transportation, keep appointments, rebuild family relationships, or establish healthy routines when housing is uncertain. S.H.E.A.T.S. therefore treats housing not as the finish line, but as the stable starting point from which the rest of a successful transition can be built.

Colorado T.E.N.T. works with justice-involved individuals over time rather than assuming that providing a resource once will solve the underlying problem. We pay attention to consistency, employment, housing, accountability, relationships, transportation, and the everyday behaviors that demonstrate whether stability is actually taking hold. When difficulties appear, the goal is to recognize them early enough that the individual and the people supporting them can respond before a setback becomes a crisis.

S.H.E.A.T.S. is also designed around community. Successful reintegration does not affect only the person returning from incarceration. It affects their family, employer, neighbors, faith community, service providers, and ultimately the broader community. When someone maintains housing, keeps a job, honors commitments, develops healthy relationships, and becomes increasingly self-sufficient, everyone benefits.

For donations designated to the S.H.E.A.T.S. program, 100% of the money raised goes directly toward housing assistance for justice-involved individuals in need. Colorado T.E.N.T. does not use any portion of these designated donations for organizational overhead or administrative expenses. Every donated dollar designated for S.H.E.A.T.S. is used to help provide the housing stability that gives a justice-involved individual the opportunity to build everything else.

Our goal is not simply to help someone get through the first days after incarceration. Our goal is lasting stability: people who can maintain housing, maintain employment, meet their responsibilities, strengthen their relationships, and become contributing members of their communities. S.H.E.A.T.S. provides the foundation from which that work can begin.
