Denim Day is an annual campaign that raises awareness and supports survivors of sexual assault. It began in 1992 in Italy when an 18 year-old girl was raped by her 45 year-old driving instructor. After a court overturned a rape conviction, claiming that because the victim wore tight jeans, she must have consented, women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans to work in protest, sparking a movement that spread worldwide. Today, Denim Day encourages people to wear jeans as a symbol of solidarity with survivors, to challenge harmful myths about sexual violence, and to support organizations that provide programs and services for survivors.
