Turning abortion rights into abortion access

As many of you know, I serve on the board of the Colorado Doula Project. I’ve been involved in the Colorado repro movement in a variety of ways over the years as a clinic escort, community organizer, and policy advocate. I've also relied on abortion medication and a D&C to manage a miscarriage - both of which are common and safe but are also stigmatized and made less accessible by abortion restrictions and bans. 

All of these personal and professional experiences have shaped my understanding of what abortion access looks like - and from this perspective, I can say that the Colorado Doula Project is special. We build on Colorado's strong abortion protections and provide frontline support for abortion-seekers, turning policy into ACCESS. 

Every day, we provide funding, travel assistance, rides, meals, and the support of trained and compassionate abortion doulas. We serve people from our own communities here in Colorado, as well as those from across the nation who travel here from places like Texas. We are an important hub in the national repro access movement and landscape. 

Since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, the Colorado Doula Project went from serving 100 clients per year to an expected 1,200 this year. So far we haven't had to turn anyone away, but it's getting harder and harder to keep up with the need.
