In the picturesque town of Cotacachi, nestled in the Ecuadorian Andes, life moves at a peaceful rhythm. But for hundreds of street dogs and cats, daily life is a struggle for survival. These animals live without shelter, consistent food, or access to medical care. Many are born on the streets, exposed to the elements, disease, and injury, often with no one to help them. 

Thanks to the work of Amici Cannis, that cycle is being broken. Our community veterinary hospital provides lifesaving care to street dogs and cats who have no one else to turn to. From preventive services like rabies vaccinations and sterilization to emergency interventions for trauma, illness, and chronic skin conditions, we are often the only line of defense for these vulnerable animals.

And we never turn a street animal away.

Over the past few years, our efforts have helped stabilize the population of street dogs in Cotacachi, reducing the number of unwanted litters and improving public health and safety. Our veterinary team reaches remote communities where veterinary care is nonexistent, ensuring that even the most isolated animals receive the attention they deserve.

Since 2015, we have provided vital care to over 50,000 animals, offering everything from routine sterilizations to advanced diagnostics like X-rays and ultrasounds. Many of these animals arrived with broken bones from car accidents, severe infections, or untreated skin conditions, cases that require immediate, often intensive, intervention.

But this year has brought new challenges.

We’ve seen a sharp increase in trauma cases, particularly from car accidents. Dogs hit by vehicles arrive with broken limbs, internal injuries, and deep wounds, many requiring urgent surgery and intensive care. At the same time, we’ve experienced a surge in demand for emergency services, stretching our resources to the limit.

Each case is a life, and each life is worth saving.
