In 1877, as Colorado celebrated its first year of statehood, several ranching families within the newly named Evergreen community joined forces to build a school for their children, constructing the Buffalo Park School on the Vezina Ranch. Over the years, the 10'x15' log structure accommodated as many as 23 students and their teacher.
As larger schools were built in the 1920s and the ranch was sold in 1948, Carrie Vezina, a longtime member of the Evergreen Woman's Club, had the tiny building dismantled and reassembled near her home. In 1967, the Evergreen Woman's Club assumed ownership, moving the schoolhouse to the grounds of Wilmot Elementary. The school district has overseen the building since the Woman’s Club Cub disbanded around 2010, but is no longer able to care for the aging building.
History Jeffco has been working with other area organizations for the past several years to find a new home and owner for the Buffalo Park School. We were recently informed that the Evergreen Park & Recreation District has agreed to take ownership of the Buffalo Park School, will be moving it next year to Marshdale Park next to West Jefferson Elementary, and restoring it. However, additional funding is needed to support stabilizing, moving the school and restoring it.
We hope that you will donate to support this valuable historic preservation and education project. With your help, it will again be used to educate Evergreen’s children, connecting them with their community’s legacy.
