August of 2016, a group of animal lovers gathered at a City Council meeting to voice their concern about the lack of off-leash dog friendly areas in Steamboat as well as the lack of any dog waste dispensers or bags. This group formed an organization called Steamboat Digs Dogs to advocate for Dogs and their owners.
The mission of this fund is to improve the usability of off-leash parks and trails to include Rita Valentine Park, Spring Creek, and Whistler Meadows Park, as well as to provide dog waste dispensers throughout Steamboat Springs and necessary dog waste bags. (we spend approximately $20,000 a year on poop bags alone as the city does not provide either dispensers or bags).
Funds have been used to provide much needed improvements at Rita Valentine Park to include Water fountain for dogs, Two pavilions for shade, The installation of 8 benches throughout the park. Improved trails for multi-use thru the park, the installation of a dog agility course, and a new informative kiosk for users.
The group has also secured off leash trails in Steamboat to include Sailors Way, Butcherknife Trail and Whistler Park.
Current funds are being collected to install a fenced in area for small dogs and dogs not friendly with others, a dog water play area at Rita Valentine Park, more trees, funds for maintenance of all improvements as well as funds for more dog waste dispensers and waste bags replacement.
Steamboat Digs Dogs continues to raise awareness in the community of dog owner responsibility for waste clean-up and sponsors a bi-yearly community dog waste clean-up.
This is a Designated Fund of the Yampa Valley Community Foundation. Donations are irrevocable assets of the Foundation to be used for the charitable purpose stated above.
