Shavano Academic Booster Club - Colorado Gives Day

Established in 1990, the Shavano Academic Booster Club (SABC) recognizes Salida students who pursue academic excellence and practice good citizenship through our Student of the Month awards (SOM). We also award small grants to students pursuing academic endeavors outside of the classroom, and award several scholarships every spring to students pursuing education beyond high school. 

Our Students of the Month are nominated by teachers and recognized in the Mountain Mail newspaper and on several photo boards placed in busy locations around the community. These SOM students then become eligible to apply for SABC grants and scholarships. 

Over the last 35 years, SABC has awarded several hundred thousand dollars in grants and scholarships to Salida students and teachers. 100% of these funds have been donated by local individuals and businesses. It has been, and continues to be, a true community effort. 

Moving forward, we are working to increase the impact of our work. We plan to restart our small grant program to support academic endeavors outside of the classroom throughout the school year and summer. For example, these grants may support students who want to pursue studies like writing programs, snow science, student exchange, video production, etc. 

We also plan to continue our traditional scholarship program for high school seniors who intend to continue pursuing academics after graduation. These scholarships can be applied toward any type of tertiary education - traditional universities, community college or technical schools. We are working now to incorporate more needs-based metrics in our scholarship program.
