You are never too old, too wacky, too wild to pick up a book and read to a child - Dr. Seuss.

I am thrilled and honored to be a Board member of Reach Out and Read Colorado (RORCO), as well as a coordinator of this program in the Sie Center for Down Syndrome at Children's Hospital Colorado. RORCO gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together. RORCO empowers health providers to talk with parents of young children about the importance of reading aloud - encouraging early literacy skills, building that child's library. As a nurse practitioner who has always worked with children who have special developmental challenges and mother of 4 children and 5 grandchildren, I have experienced, firsthand, the miracle of reading together starting at an early age. Research through the American Academy of Pediatrics has shown that the earliest months and years of a child's life are critical periods in brain development and speech acquisition and in our clinic we have recently published an article showing the positive impact of RORCO on our population of children with Down syndrome.

Reach Out and Read Colorado currently works with more than 330 clinics and 2,019 healthcare providers to provide books and literacy guidance at 260,000 well-child visits each year.

I have personally committed to friend-raising a total of $500 for Colorado Gives Day. I hope you will join me in empowering our families and their children to be able to read aloud together and help them develop literacy skills that will empower them throughout their life. Reading together is one of life's very special moments. Please consider helping us create more special moments for children who need books on Colorado Gives Day!
