About Greg and Snowy Peaks
Greg Bachman was a beloved teacher at Snowy Peaks Jr/Sr High School, a non-traditional, relationship-based school that takes pride in creating a student-centered learning community and providing an individualized experience for all students. Nature is one of the cornerstones of this truly special place of learning, and Greg's focus was to get students outside.
Greg was also an avid biker, riding thousands of miles in hundreds of self-supported bicycling adventures and organized events, many of which were part of the Leadville Race Series. He was well-known and respected in the bicycling community. Greg was looking forward to completing the 2022 Leadville Challenge, an epic, 5-event endurance challenge, but his life was taken much too soon in a bicycling accident with a careless driver, that occurred before the Unbound Gravel event in Emporia, Kansas, in June 2022. Greg loved his Single-Speed Ridgid
Upon hearing of Greg's death, Ken and Merilee (Leadville Trail 100 race founders) reached out to find a way to honor this lost "Leadville Family Member". Thus the Leadville Team Challenge was formed.
Leadville Challenge Team
An invitation was extended for me, his wife, Crystal Miller, to honor Greg’s memory this year by forming a ‘Leadville Challenge’ Team. Team members would wear Greg's bib number (204) and compete in each Challenge event in Greg’s name. We are a team of 5 who will attempt what Greg would have done as a solo competitor. We are Greg's family and his team and are honored to do the work and the miles to represent him and celebrate his amazing legacy.
And we need your help!
Our Goal
Our goal to honor Greg’s legacy ties back directly to his work with the students at Snowy Peaks. Experiential education often requires funding from sources beyond the school budget. Your contribution will be used to provide needed supplies, equipment, and resources to actualize student-selected, student-centered experiences and opportunities. Past projects have included: building a sailboat, building and maintaining local trails, hiking/climbing 14ers, the Yeti Bicycle Challenge, and converting the family mini-van into a viable living space while attending college. In the fall of 2022, Greg was planning to take students on their first-ever overnight backpacking experience.
Greg was happiest outside, riding bicycles, building his van, and being with Crystal and his dogs. His knowledge of the natural environment, analytical thinking skills, and inquisitiveness made him the perfect mentor for students. And he sincerely believed in the power of learning by doing!
There would be a no better tribute to this man we all loved than to be part of the Leadville Challenge and to provide an avenue for present and future students of Snowy Peaks to actualize a dream and gain valuable life skills through hands-on learning experiences.

Kirsten Gilb - Marathon.
Kirsten's Why - I loved being in Greg's presence....quiet, humble, and goal-driven. Just watching him on the trail was a gift. Every step on the trail is for my friend Greg.
Crystal Miller - Greg's wife- 50-mile bike.
Crystal's Why - Greg was my constant companion, the love of my life & my support. Anytime I was stressed, upset, or even happy, he would say "Go pedal".

Fred Newcomer - 100 Mile Bike
Fred's Why - Greg & Crystal were a driving force in getting me back to focusing on the bike. Greg would always quietly nudge me on our morning dog walks, "Get out and pedal today." I'm honored to wear his number in the Leadville 100 MTB and I know he'll be nudging me along the entire day. Go Pedal!
