AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college-prep program for students who want to go to college but need additional support to get there. AVID students may be the first to go to college, they may be living in a difficult situation, or they may need the support to push themselves in higher-level classes, such as AP or IB classes. Some students may have all of these obstacles or a few, but AVID helps to give them the support so that they can push through these obstacles and achieve their goals. We embed in AVID the chance to go on several college visits, to see the school and start to find what school will be the best fit for each student; the opportunity to hear guest speakers talk about different professions or internships, etc.; and help with supplies for students who cannot afford them, such as binders to graphing calculators, etc. This funding can also help students with their fees for AP and IB tests or books. However, providing students with these options can be expensive so we look for help from the community and fundraising to help continue these opportunities. This helps to level the playing field for our students and helps them get the most out of their education so that they can continue toward their goal of going to college.
