Colorado Denim Day is aligned with the world wide Denim Day movement. Denim Day is an annual, national day of awareness that takes place on the last Wednesday of April. It encourages people to wear denim as a symbol of protest against sexual assault and to raise awareness of the misconceptions surrounding the crime. The event started in 1999 as a response to an Italian court ruling that dismissed a sexual assault case because the victim had been wearing tight jeans. Women in the Italian Parliament wore denim in solidarity with the victim, sparking an international movement.
In Colorado, state agencies, businesses, and other groups are asked to allow their employees to donate $5 in exchange for wearing jeans on Denim Day. Colorado Denim Day donations support the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault‘s work to address and prevent sexual violence in Colorado.
