Aloha kākou,

My name is Frederick Welch IV, a proud Native Hawaiian and dedicated ultra-runner. I am writing to respectfully request your support as I embark on an incredible challenge — L e a d v i l l e T r a i l 1 0 0 R u n .

Aside from my athletic pursuits, my greatest priority has been providing for my family and leading them in faith as a dedicated husband and father of three girls.

Originally born and raised on the island of O’ahu, I humbly serve my community as a Police Officer of the Maui Police Department on the island of Moloka’i. I strive to live by the values of perseverance, resilience, and service as instilled in me by my kupuna, beliefs, and life experiences.

I am humbled to yet again have the opportunity to be the first Native Hawaiian to participate in this event; an opportunity to carry the strength and aloha of our Hawaiian people alongside others on a global stage.

I am also dedicating this race to fellow fallen Maui Police Officer, Suzanne O who gave her life on August 15, 2025. The belt buckle will be received in her honor, and placed on her memorial.

I am also running to raise money for the Leadville Trail 100 Legacy Foundation, the original charitable partner of the Leadville Race Series. The Foundation exists to give back to the community that has made Leadville and these races so special.  What makes that mission especially meaningful to me is where the money goes.

The Foundation invests in the future of Leadville and Lake County through education, community programs, recreation, economic development, and preservation of the town’s mining heritage. Their Trail 100 Scholarship program provides a $3,000 scholarship to every Lake County High School graduate pursuing further education!  And their Legacy Grants help fund local initiatives—from youth recreation to community meals, emergency services, trails, parks, and other programs that make Leadville a better place to live and raise a family.

Coming from a small island, I understand that the Keiki (children) are our future. To nurture and guide them on the right path is the our Kuleana (responsibility). Whatever is given will go to their future .

Mahalo Nui Loa for your time and consideration.
