Mission Statement

The mission of the Second Wind Fund is to decrease the incidence of suicide in children and youth by removing financial and social barriers to treatment.

Second Wind Fund believes that every child and youth at risk of suicide should have access to the mental health treatment they need. We match children and youth at risk for suicide with licensed therapists in their communities. If a financial or social barrier to treatment is present, we pay for up to 12 sessions of therapy from one of our specialized network providers. Our unique program helps referred youth discover hope and healing in their lives.

Organization History

Second Wind Fund was founded in response to multiple suicides by students that attended the same high school during the 2001-2002 school year. Determined to ensure that youth at risk of suicide would always have access to high-quality, professional, and timely mental health support, a community walk was organized by a local church to raise funds and Second Wind Fund was created to provide these services.

The youth suicide rate throughout Colorado is alarmingly high. Over the last 18 years, Second Wind Fund has expanded to provide life-saving services to over 6,000 children and teens in communities throughout Colorado.

Testimonials

Second Wind Fund saves lives, plain and simple, which is why I have chosen and been privileged to serve as a member of the Board of Directors since 2009. I know that every hour I dedicate and every dollar I donate has a huge impact in my community.

Second Wind Fund is a unique and special organization because it connects with children and youth at risk for suicide at their point of need in a way that no other organization (either public or private) does. As a resource for Colorado to treasure and grow, Second Wind Fund needs the community to continue supporting our work so that all of our children can access care. Our kids, our community. Your kids, your community.

---

Second Wind Fund's underlying goal is to ensure that all children/youth at risk of suicide have access to life-saving therapy. The impact we are seeking is to save the lives of those children/youth who for one reason or another fall through the cracks of other treatment systems. Our evaluation informs us that the primary reason that children/youth sometimes don't get treatment elsewhere is because financial barriers exist. Second Wind Fund is uniquely placed to serve this population, paying for therapy with professional therapists with funds raised from the community. The impact to the community at large is that, because of Second Wind Fund, every child can access care. We have always been able to say 'yes' when other treatment systems have said 'no' and this has a fundamental impact on the individuals we serve and the community at- large.

"In my career as a school psychologist in Jefferson County, I have lived through some very tough situations. The Second Wind Fund is a silver lining born from a very dark situation. Over the years since its' inception, The Second Wind Fund has helped me save the lives of over 50 youth at risk for suicide whose families could not afford adequate counselling services. I can't think of a better example of a community coming together to solve a problem that had no easy solution. The Second Wind fund truly lives up to its' name and provides a second wind for the sails of those who most need it."
-School Psychologist, Jefferson County School District

"I have worked with Second Wind for over five years and they have always been easy to work with. However, they go above and beyond in finding therapists whose specialties are in line with the needs of students. Our biggest fear is that students who are resistant to counseling will not have a productive experience. This has luckily never been the case because Second Wind is very thorough in finding several therapists who match. This year, I was very concerned about a resistant student. The needs of the student along with family dynamics were huge obstacles. Without going into identifying detail, I must say that I am blown away by the therapist who was willing to travel, and meet with the entire family. The changes are beginning and I am no longer worried about this student. This student in particular raised my level of concern to the highest degree...but no more! I can't thank Second Wind enough!"
-Middle School Counselor, Adams 12 School District

"At a time when our school faced incredible grief and loss, Second Wind walked along with us to provide quality mental health services to our students and families. The professionalism and caring of mental health professionals and Second Wind staff brought great comfort and hope."
-Elementary School Principal, East Grand School District No. 2
