For 121 years, Tennyson Center for Children has been a place where children and families across Colorado find safety, compassion, and hope. Many children who have experienced severe trauma, abuse, and neglect arrive here having faced incredible challenges that no child should endure, and some have moved through 8 to 12 placements before finding their way to us.
At Tennyson, our cottages often become the first place that truly feels like home and a space where children begin to feel safe and seen.
This Colorado Gives Day, we’re asking you to partner with us to create safe, nurturing cottage environments where Colorado’s most vulnerable children can rebuild their lives. Through our Cottages of Hope campaign, we’re transforming residential spaces into true healing homes.
Because at Tennyson, healing doesn’t happen in offices. It happens in warm kitchens, cozy bedrooms, and quiet spaces where a child can finally exhale, feel at home, and begin again.

Mission
Tennyson Center works to improve the mental health and wellness of those impacted by trauma and other adverse experiences.
For more than a century, Tennyson Center for Children has provided safe, experienced, nurturing care, and treatment for the most neglected, abused, and traumatized children in Colorado.
What began in 1904 as an orphanage for kids in need of safety and stability has grown into a statewide leader in child and family mental health, helping children heal, rebuild trust, and rediscover hope.
Today, Tennyson offers an accredited Therapeutic K–12 School and Day Treatment Program with a 4:1 student-to-staff ratio, a Residential Program for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and co-occurring mental health diagnoses, and Community-Based and Family Support Services that reach families across the state. We work directly with nearly 1,500 family members each year.
Background Statement
Tennyson opened its doors in 1904 as an orphanage for Colorado's most vulnerable kids. Since then, we've evolved to meet the rising mental health needs of kids and families in our state. Our goal is to strengthen and support kids and families so children won’t enter the foster care system in the first place. For kids already in the system, we want to keep their adoptive families strong so kids won’t be moved from foster home to foster home.
Our team of therapists, teachers, early childhood experts, and volunteers help kids and families find their unique paths to healing, sometimes working 2-10 hours a week with one family to build the skills and supports they need to heal. We often hear from families that Tennyson offers a level of compassion and expertise they could not find anywhere else.
These efforts are improving kids' lives, which ensures a healthier future for our state. We hope you will join us by standing up for the most vulnerable members of our community!
