The Open Sanctuary Project is a freely accessible, always growing digital guide for any resources or information you need in order to responsibly create and successfully manage an animal sanctuary or to provide the best possible care to animals in order to help them live long, healthy, happy lives free of exploitation.

All of our resources are researched and responsibly crafted with the intention of promoting compassionate care standards and practices for animals in need of help and sanctuary, while identifying and discouraging practices that are exploitative or harmful to the individual.

  • Founded as an independent organization in 2018, The Open Sanctuary Project is a freely accessible, always-growing digital library that includes over 800 responsibly researched resources for anyone interested in compassionate long-term care of farmed animals, effective community education, advocacy practices, and sustainable management practices of animal-based organizations.
  • The Open Sanctuary Project’s staff is a small and lean team of five individuals with accumulated decades of experience in animal rescue, direct caregiving, education, narrative-sharing, law, and nonprofit governance. Our staff is the heart and soul of all our programming.
  • The Open Sanctuary Project operates on a small annual budget of approximately $415,000. 89.9% of this budget goes directly into programming expenses, with a mere 10.1% going to administrative and fundraising costs.
  • In 2023 alone, over half a million individual users from every country on Earth accessed The Open Sanctuary Project’s resource library.
  • The Open Sanctuary Project’s resources includes downloadable templates and resources for use in resident recordkeeping, governance purposes, sanctuary education lesson plans, and even more. As of 2024, our audience has downloaded these kinds of resources over 5,400 times.
  • As of 2024, over 1,100 sanctuaries, rescues, and animal advocacy organizations, located in at least 43 different countries, utilize our resources.
  • We are a 501(c)(3) public charity, with a Gold Transparency rating from Guidestar/Candid, and a Four Star rating (the highest available) from Charity Navigator.

Mission

To provide reliable, actionable knowledge to sanctuaries and individuals who want to be of service to farmed animals.

Background Statement

Farmed animal sanctuaries around the world all know the “why” behind their organizations; there’s an immediate, dire need for compassionate treatment of farmed animals, and the dedicated humans who currently are serving and want to be of service to farmed animals have the passion to give their residents the best lives possible given the resources each sanctuary can generate. These organizations also typically share their residents’ stories with the public, with the mission of education and the hope of generating more compassion for some of the most systematically abused species on the planet.

The question that many sanctuaries face each day is the “how”; how does an organization best provide for farmed animals for the entirety of their natural lives? How do they most effectively get a compassionate message out to the public? How do they create an organization that also does well by the humans involved, that can avoid regulatory and reputational pitfalls, that can be sustainable for years to come? In the past, the best answer was loose networking among like-minded organizations, a few sanctuaries being willing to give slivers of information, and a lot of concerning guesswork.

The Open Sanctuary Project, Inc, was founded to change all that. Our mission statement, “to serve sanctuaries and individuals who want to be of service to farmed animals”, says it all. We’re here to help sanctuaries provide the best care to their residents, to be the strongest organizations they can be, and ultimately help create more lasting change in the world. Ultimately, we want every farmed animal sanctuary to be a success story, and we want to see a world where not a single farmed animal sanctuary has to close its doors.
