Building a hopeful future for birds and the environments that sustain them.

Building a hopeful future for birds and their habitats is about preserving nature's profound joys—like the flash of a bright warbler at the backyard feeder or the morning symphony of songbirds greeting the dawn. These experiences awaken a sense of wonder and connection, grounding us in our shared place within the natural world.

Today, this connection faces threats from climate change, habitat loss, and urban expansion. Without genuine care for birds and their ecosystems, these connections become vulnerable to development trends that often prioritize profit and convenience over the preservation of vital habitats.

That’s why Denver Audubon's mission goes beyond merely protecting bird populations; it’s about preserving moments of awe and reflection for generations to come, ensuring everyone can experience the beauty, peace, and inspiration nature offers.

Through our educational programs, we nurture curiosity, empathy, and stewardship, inspiring simple actions to protect our wild friends who have no voice yet are essential to our world. Together, we’re building a future where birds thrive, their songs enrich our mornings, and people of all ages find solace and awe in nature’s wonders. In this way, we’re working toward a healthier, more hopeful planet for all.

Mission

Inspiring actions that protect birds, other wildlife, and their habitats through education, conservation, and research.

Background Statement

A LEGACY OF CONSERVATION

Since 1969, Denver Audubon has been a steadfast advocate for birds and their natural habitats in the greater Denver area. As an independent chapter of the National Audubon Society, we’ve worked hand in hand with passionate donors and volunteers to preserve the delicate balance of our ecosystems and champion bird conservation.

Birds are much more than colorful feathers and melodious songs; they are sentinels of our environment, guiding us with their migrations, revealing the subtle changes in our climate, and helping us understand the health of our planet. Whether through seed dispersal, pollination, or pest control, they play vital roles in maintaining the balance of nature.

OUR IMPACT

At Denver Audubon, we know that the future of conservation lies in education. By fostering a love for nature, we instill in the hearts of children and adults alike the importance of protecting birds and their habitats. Our programs touch thousands of lives each year:

School Programs: Over 3,000 students each year experience hands-on environmental education through interactive sessions, immersive year-long programs, and field trips to the Kingery Nature Center, opening their eyes to the wonders of birds and nature.

Adult Programs: We offer over 150 field trips and educational classes annually, including popular programs like Beginning Birdwatching, Audubon Master Birders, and Community Naturalist Training. Each experience deepens participants’ connection to birds and conservation.

Denver Audubon Kingery Nature Center: Our nature center’s native plant landscape provides a sanctuary for over 345 bird species and is home to many of our educational programs, bird banding sessions, and summer camps. Last year, over 105,000 visitors and volunteers explored the beauty of our campus, learning and sharing in their love of birds.

Conservation and Advocacy: Through workshops and advocacy support, we empower local residents and groups to protect wildlife and their habitats. From writing letters to lawmakers to testifying at hearings, we offer the tools needed to make a meaningful difference.

Research: Our initiatives, such as the Colorado Bluebird Project and bird banding, provide valuable data on local bird populations. Through the Lois Webster Fund, we also provide grants to support critical education and research on Colorado’s non-game wildlife, helping uncover solutions to pressing conservation challenges.

A CALL TO ACTION

Over the past 50 years, North America has lost more than one-third of its bird population—over 3 billion birds. The forces of climate change, habitat destruction, and pollution continue to erode the natural world we cherish. Yet, with your help, we can change this trajectory. Together, we can restore and protect the birds we love.

By instilling a sense of stewardship for birds and their habitats, Denver Audubon plays a crucial role in the global effort to protect these species. Through our field-based learning and conservation initiatives, we’ve become a leader in science education and wildlife preservation throughout Metro Denver and beyond.

WHERE BIRDS THRIVE, PEOPLE THRIVE

Just as a flock of birds draws strength from each individual wingbeat, we draw strength from our community of supporters. Every gift, no matter the size, helps us protect the wild places where birds live, ensuring a healthier, more sustainable world for us all.

Your generosity today ensures that tomorrow’s skies will remain full of life and song. Please consider making a gift to Denver Audubon and join us in nurturing the natural world that sustains us all. Where birds thrive, people thrive.
