Maltese Group: From Helpless to Hopeful
In August, an overwhelmed caretaker reached out to our Community Pet Resources Team because she had nowhere else to turn. She was doing her best to care for the animals who depended on her, but without reliable transportation or the financial resources to provide everything they needed, the situation had become too much for one person to manage. When our team arrived, they found more than 20 dogs in need of care, most of them Maltese.
Our team immediately got to work. Every dog received essential veterinary care, including spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and grooming. Seven dogs were able to return home with their caretaker, while seven others came into the care of Animal Friends Alliance to find families of their own.
All seven dogs who came into our care were adopted into loving homes! What began as an overwhelming situation became seven new beginnings.
Because of supporters like you, we could step in when this caretaker needed help most, provide essential care for these dogs, and give seven pups the loving families they deserved.
Greeley Bushbabies: A Cat Colony's Second Chance
In June, a concerned citizen contacted us after spotting what appeared to be a cat colony living in a bush beside a busy road in Greeley. Our Community Cat Program Coordinator, James, responded and discovered cats and kittens in desperate need of help.
Over the course of many visits, James trapped about 14 cats and kittens and brought them into our care. With proper nutrition, vaccinations, deworming, and spay/neuter surgeries, they began making quick recoveries.
The adult cats were under socialized with people, so our team worked diligently to place them in homes as working cats. There, they could enjoy outdoor freedom in safer environments with people to provide food and care. A litter of kittens was young enough to go to foster homes, where they learned how to live indoors. In time, they, too, were adopted into loving homes and began their lives as cozy indoor cats.
Because of our incredible supporters and dedicated staff, these 14 cats received the care they needed and a second chance at safer, healthier lives.

From November 1 through December 8, every gift donated benefits from a $1 million Incentive Fund provided by the Colorado Gives Foundation. Born from compassion and community, Animal Friends Alliance was created in January 2020 through the union of Fort Collins Cat Rescue & Spay/Neuter Clinic and Animal House Rescue & Grooming. Together, we became stronger — joining forces to amplify our impact and create a greater, more lasting difference for animals and the people who love them.
Today, Animal Friends Alliance stands as a limited-admission, adoption-guarantee shelter for cats and dogs. That means every animal who enters our care is promised safety, compassion, and a loving home — no matter how long it takes. While our space and resources may be finite, our commitment is not. Every dog and cat who finds their way to us is cared for until they find a family to call their own — and if that family ever needs to return them, we welcome them back with open arms.
Our mission goes beyond shelter walls. Through our subsidized spay/neuter and vaccine services, we’re tackling pet homelessness at its root, providing accessible preventive care to thousands of pets every year. Our Prevent A Litter Plus (PAL+) Program offers free or low-cost spay/neuter surgeries and discounted vaccines and microchipping for pets belonging to low-income families, while our Kibble Supply Pet Food Pantry helps keep beloved pets with their families during times of hardship.
In 2025, we proudly expanded our reach through a partnership with PetSmart Charities®, opening the Everyday Adoption Center inside PetSmart Westminster. This new location provides space for up to 40 adoptable cats and dogs at a time, connecting more pets with loving families in a welcoming, community-centered environment.
Just recently in October 2026, we excitedly opened the doors to our brand new Ella Marie Strait Community Clinic. This new clinic will offer sick and urgent care, dentistry, and surgical procedures beyond spay/neuter services, helping more families find affordable care for their pets.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (Tax ID# 20-4969731), Animal Friends Alliance operates entirely through the generosity of our supporters — individuals, businesses, and foundations who share our belief that every animal deserves love, care, and a place to belong. We receive no government funding, which means every donation directly fuels our lifesaving programs and the promise we make to every pet who comes through our doors: you are safe, you are loved, and you will never be forgotten.
