This year has been record-breaking and heart-breaking: as of November 23, 2021, 76 people have been killed in preventable traffic crashes on Denver's streets, with still weeks to go before the end of the year. When I think about these numbers, and the faces and names of our community members whose lives have been tragically cut short, I often feel despair. But I also feel hope, because I have seen what is possible when we reclaim even some of our street space for people. Because other cities have shown us the way to zero traffic fatalities, through street designs that prioritize people over the speed and convenience of driving. Because safer streets not only save lives, they enhance our lives, they create joy and peace and connection to each other.
If you share the Denver Streets Partnership's belief that human dignity should be the guiding principle for the design of our streets and public spaces, please consider contributing to support our work in 2022.
