Background Statement
Since opening our doors in 1995, Butterfly Pavilion has welcomed more than five million visitors. Butterfly Pavilion is the first Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited nonprofit, standalone invertebrate zoo in the world, and our impact on research, conservation, and education is felt everywhere from our backyards to around the world.
Butterfly Pavilion is a one-of-a-kind experience; truly an unforgettable, interactive, and educational place for all. Our facility includes four indoor exhibit areas; eleven acres of public gardens; two educational classrooms; and event space overlooking Jefferson County Open Space.
Our research and conservation efforts break ground in new and exciting ways; from first-of-its-kind research on the lifecycle of fireflies and surveying invertebrate species on public lands across Colorado, to installing beehive fences to protect elephants and people in Tanzania and researching endangered butterflies in Mongolia.
Butterfly Pavilion provides educational opportunities to more than 60,000 school-aged children and 420,000 visitors annually. We offer school field trips, virtual learning opportunities, after-school enrichment activities, youth day camps, and family workshops ensuring that every person, regardless of income or ability, can experience the wonder of invertebrates and our natural environment.
Our community science projects invite volunteers and community members to be scientists alongside us, restoring urban and rural prairies and monitoring butterflies and fireflies as part of our ongoing population data tracking projects.
