Mission

Paleocultural Research Group is a member-supported, 501[c][3] nonprofit organization that conducts scientific research, trains students, and educates the public on the archaeology of the Great Plains and Southern Rocky Mountains. PCRG's citizen science archaeology projects use state-of-the-art field and lab techniques to investigate human communities and their relationships to the natural environment, from North America's earliest Native American inhabitants to nineteenth-century traders and settlers. PCRG broadly disseminates its research findings to professional and public audiences, raising awareness of Plains and Rocky Mountains archaeology and fostering preservation of the unmatched archaeological resources those regions contain.

Background Statement

Founded in 1996, PCRG has built long-term partnerships with a diverse mix of federal agencies, state agencies, universities, and other nonprofit organizations. PCRG's mission combines two primary objectives: heritage research and public engagement in archaeology and historic preservation. All PCRG projects are guided by anthropological research objectives and historic preservation goals. PCRG also conducts focused archaeological assessments designed to evaluate the research potential of specific sites or areas as well as selected cultural resources planning projects. PCRG's other primary objective, public engagement, is met both through direct participation and through post-project interpretation. During the 2019 field season, 64 individuals donated 6,184 person-hours to six different projects.

PCRG produces videos, interpretive signs, posters and brochures, museum exhibits, and school curricula that communicate project results to the public. Those interpretive products help current residents of the Plains and Rocky Mountains understand and appreciate the diverse ways people have used the regions' landscapes in the in the past.
