Testimonials

Yale Elementary - Jennifer Slaughter.  Teacher

"Three years ago, Yale Elementary School implemented an after-school club program aimed at offering students a diverse range of activities. The goal was to provide them with opportunities to explore new interests and develop skills beyond their regular curriculum. As part of this initiative, CMDance, a renowned dance organization, was invited to lead a dance club for interested students.

This dance club meets twice a week, with a CMDance professional instructor teaching various dance styles such as swing and hip hop. Through these sessions, participants not only learn the art of dance but also develop discipline, coordination, and self-expression. At the end of each quarter, parents are invited to a recital where the students showcase the dances they have learned.

In the Spring of 2023, our students were given a remarkable opportunity to perform at the Student Showcase alongside students from other schools across the city. This event allowed them to share their talents with a wider audience, including fellow students, family, and friends. The experience was met with great enthusiasm and excitement. Building on this success, Yale Elementary School is thrilled to announce that our students will again participate in the 2024 Student Showcase. We believe that ongoing involvement in such events fosters creativity and self-confidence and promotes a sense of community and camaraderie among our students.

The dance club has proven to be a valuable addition to our after-school program, providing our students with exposure to a unique and enriching activity. We are grateful to CMD for their expertise and dedication in teaching our students the art of dance. This partnership has truly enhanced the educational experience at Yale Elementary School and has opened doors for our students that would not have otherwise had access."

Clayton Early Learning - Denise Ortega
"One of my goals as an Early Childhood Educator is to enhance motor development through creative experiences. Using creative movement allows young children to respond to open-ended activities in unique ways, provides them with opportunities and experiences to build confidence. and allows them to feel success. Keeping in mind that each of our children develop at a different pace, CMDance instructors have done a wonderful job in providing our Head Start children with these experiences .  Our children became aware of their own bodies: the space it occupies and it's capability of movement were directly influenced through the instruction and experiences provided weekly by CMDance.
During the end of the year celebration, our children, ages 3 to 5 performed before their parents and school.  I feel this is a valuable program and would love this program to continue in our class. Thank you so much for allowing us to experience all of the many wonderful opportunities from CMDance. "

Samuels Elementary -  Ms. Nydia Gonzales, ECE Head Start Teacher
"It is with great pleasure and heartfelt thanks that I write this letter.  As a Family Service Worker I find enjoyment in programs that support and teach our kid's the beauty of Music and Dance with Unity.  To be able to collaborate and work with CMDance, our Outstanding Vendor for 2022 and 2023 and share your success has been amazing!  As a dancer myself, our teachers and our students enjoy every little dance step with Mrs. Carolina and CMDance.  They bring love, smiles, unity and enthusiasm to our smallest learners.  Thanks to CMD we have "Happy Feet '' and a perk in our steps.
Last year's dance recital was spectacular seeing what CMDance contributes to DPS Head Start Programs!   We look forward to another year of collaboration and to continue our Parent and Child Engagement through CMDance."

Early Excellence Program of Denver – Janice Rodriguez, Director
"Our preschool program serves the Denver Cole and Five Points communities and many of our families are the most in-need and at-risk in the Denver metro area. We are a small non-profit and cannot afford to pay guest instructors to come in and work with our students. CMDance understood the needs of our children and figured out a way to provide a no-cost option for our students to receive their high-quality instruction. Without this in-kind contribution from CMDance, our children would not have the opportunity to experience and learn the rich history of dance from high-quality instructors. CMDance consistently exceeds all expectations. "

Mission

CMDance, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, builds healthy, thriving communities, cultivating the next generation of artists through world-class arts education programs that bring the global culture of social dancing to Colorado youth and adults.

Inspired by indigenous music styles, vernacular dances are those that evolve naturally within a community without the involvement of professional choreographers, such as the Tango, Swing, Lindy Hop and Hip Hop. CMDance holds a prominent position in the Colorado arts scene with both its school outreach and broader community engagement. The core work of CMDance is to provide world-class dance and music education programming for adults and children of all ages. Through all-ages events and workshops and arts education programs for public school children Pre-K through 12th grades, participants advance their dance skills and abilities while connecting through the universal language of dance.

CMDance creates connections between varied ethnic and cultural groups and builds bridges across generational gaps through dance events that bring together participants from diverse backgrounds. These events act as spaces for people of all generations, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds to build relationships around the joy of dance and music ultimately strengthening the fabric of our community. Drilling down into the most basic social unit, children participating in school-based programs bring their parents to workshops and social dances, further strengthening the fabric of the family.

Background Statement

1999 CMDance was founded for the purpose of bringing world-class dancers and musicians to Colorado. CMDance ran its first Swing Dance event, bringing in a staff of top level international instructors and musicians.

2002 CMDance expanded event programming to include multiple, simultaneous progressive tracks, in order to accommodate the increased workshop attendance and dancer skill levels.

2003 We opened our fusion dancing and cross-cultural training by offering classes and workshops in Argentine Tango and Argentine culture.

2007 We received our 501c3 designation

2008-Present

CMDance launched its high school clinics and mentoring programming by expanding the time our guest artists' stay in Colorado in order to provide school programs. The Hot Night Dance Series, blending music, dance and film of North and South America.

With Hot Night Fusion we expanded and enhanced our South American programming to include the Brazilian Zouk, folkloric dance of Chile and Argentina, and added monthly evening and weekend programs in addition to our quarterly programs to provide additional training and educational opportunities.

CMDance elaborates on styles, genres and artists with supplementary programs such as Women in Jazz that brought attention to the great female artists that have deeply impacted the Jazz world.

We developed Follow the Drum as a music project that highlighted the heritage of musical and dance genres that are rooted in communities of color (e.g. Jazz, Blues, African and Latin). The Neo Dance Stories is a cultural fusion, dance and music project built from Argentine Tango, Cuban Salsa, Dominican Bachata, and American Hip Hop and Blues to fuse musical genres and dance styles. These special programs are incorporated across all programming including educational programming from youth through to adults.

Our partnership with Denver's Great Kids Head Start, Denver Public Schools, Jeffco Schools, and Aurora Public Schools offers a unique opportunity to leverage existing multi-level programs and public/private partnerships to assure that children ages 4-5 are meeting the early childhood learning standards for dance and movement, while positively impacting childhood obesity. We are currently serving 1100 ECE students per week.

90% of our programming is in Denver and its 7 surrounding counties.

Today, CMDance holds a prominent position in the Colorado arts scene with both its school outreach and broader community engagement. CMDance hosts three annual, nationally recognized dance events, and 100% of the proceeds from those events support our youth programs. CMDance partners include Arts and Venues Denver, Denver Art Museum, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Denver Botanic Gardens, Downtown Denver Partnership, Tango Colorado, and Colorado Swing Dance Club.
