Mission Statement

Our Mission
Youth on Record empowers Colorado's underserved youth to achieve their academic, artistic, and personal best by employing local, professional artists as their educators.

Organization History

Since 2008, YOR has been bringing Colorado's most respected and talented musicians into high schools and youth residential treatment centers. Credited as the most utilized music provider for Denver Public Schools, our intensive, out-of-school-time activates, for-credit music classes, advanced technical training, and the positive mentorships offered by our musician-instructors are empowering young people in Denver's most vulnerable communities to graduate and develop the skills needed to enter the workforce or pursue a post-secondary education. Today, we serve 1,000 at-risk young people who come from the following neighborhoods:
Athmar Park, Baker, Barnum, Barnum West, Clayton, Cole, College View/South Platte, East Colfax, Elyria Swansea, Globeville, Jefferson Park, La Alma/Lincoln Park, Mar Lee, Montbello, Northeast Park Hill, Ruby Hill, Sun Valley, Valverde, Villa Park, West Colfax, and Westwood.
Our YMS, a state-of-the-art studio which was made possible through a generous contribution from The Anschutz Foundation, is providing young people with a safe alternative to harmful and delinquent behavior. Every minute that a vulnerable teen spends at our facility is a minute that they could otherwise be engaging in harmful behaviors - including substance use and abuse, harmful interactions with law enforcement, fighting and gang-related activities, and truancy, to name a few.

"My life is on track because of y'all". quote from Isreal YOR intern

"This is my 6th YOR class in a row. It is why I keep coming (to school)". - John - YOR Student

"IT's FUN! You get to do a lot of different things. It's not one instrument, it's always changing. It helped me understand music better. It made me break down what music really is. I love it, I really do!" - Midori, 9th grade DPS student

"Music is my voice and Youth on Record will help me amplify it" - Josue, 11th grade DPS student

As an educator, there's nothing more fulfilling than to see young adults doing what they love while learning at the same time. Youth on Record creates the platform where that can happen daily--and for students who may only come to school because they're in the Youth on Record program. It's hard to put into words what this organization does for our school, but let me try: Youth on Record breathes life into the school day. Our YOR educators find greatness in every one of the students they teach and then help students channel that greatness, all through musical expression. It's a transformative experience that changes their lives.
Erin Quigly, Principal, Venture Prep
This is my second year working with Tyler and his team and they have been beyond amazing and supportive for my students. They remain flexible with my very transient group of students and are always upbeat and positive, even when my students may not show up when promised (which happens often). I feel grateful that my students have a musical outlet that is positive, energetic and truly inspirational. Not only do my students return from their sessions with a new found confidence, they come in with excitement wanting to share their creations with me. I genuinely appreciate every second they provide to my students.
Robyn Purvin, Facilitator, Youth Career Development Services GED Plus Program, Emily Griffith High School
