W.O.L.F. Sanctuary

A nonprofit organization

For 30 years, W.O.L.F. Sanctuary has answered the call for captive-born wolves and wolf dogs who have nowhere else to go. They are the in-between—the forgotten ones. Too tame for the wild, yet often too wild for life as traditional companion animals.

Born into captivity, abandoned, or surrendered through no fault of their own, these animals need compassion, understanding, and a place to belong.

At W.O.L.F. Sanctuary, they find all three through our core pillars:

  • Rescue: We respond when wolf dogs are in crisis—working alongside partners nationwide to coordinate urgent rescues, provide transportation, and ensure safe placement for animals who would otherwise face euthanasia or neglect. We've coordinated hundreds of successful rescues this year alone.
  • Sanctuary: Our residents live out their days in large, half-acre habitats that mimic their natural environments. Every animal receives individualized attention, veterinary care, enrichment, and the dignity and safety of a forever home.
  • Education: We strive to change hearts and minds by helping people understand the unique needs of captive-born wolves and wolf dogs—and the vital role wild wolves play in maintaining balance within our ecosystems. Through outreach and ambassador programs, we teach respect for these incredible animals and the natural world we all share.

Now, as we prepare to open our new home in Red Feather Lakes, your support means more than ever. Your gift will help fund daily operations, complete essential property improvements, and expand our capacity to rescue more animals and welcome visitors for educational experiences.

The more we raise this Colorado Gives Day, the more lives we can save—and the greater the impact we can make for wolf dogs and wolves everywhere.

Mission

W.O.L.F.'s mission is to improve the quality of life for wolves and wolf dogs through Rescue, Sanctuary and Education.

-- We provide RESCUE assistance within a nationwide and international network to help place wolves and wolf dogs in healthy, appropriate settings.

-- Lifelong SANCTUARY is given to 30 captive-born animals we directly rescue, providing them with high-quality food, medical care, and roomy habitats in a natural, mountainous setting.

-- EDUCATION is key to teaching schoolchildren and the public that wolves should remain in the wild, are an important part of a healthy ecosystem, and that wolf dogs should not be kept as pets.

Background Statement

For thirty years, W.O.L.F. Sanctuary has been a safe haven for the forgotten—captive-born wolves and wolf dogs caught between two worlds: too wild for domestic life, yet too tame for the wild. Founded to give these animals the compassion and care they deserve, W.O.L.F. also works to inspire understanding of both captive-born wolf dogs and wild wolves, ensuring that future generations recognize the vital role wolves play in nature’s balance.

After surviving devastating fires and floods, W.O.L.F. has emerged stronger than ever. Our 160-acre property, purchased in 2016 and brought to life in 2023, marks a new chapter—one where we can finally welcome the public, expand our rescue capacity, and continue our mission to protect the wild spirit of the wolves we love.

Over the years, we’ve helped nearly 4,000 animals through partnerships across the country and reached tens of thousands of people through our educational programs. Today, our sanctuary can care for up to 30 wolf dogs at a time—but our vision is to double that number at our new home near Red Feather Lakes, where the pack can live freely and thrive.
