Background Statement

The Spirituals Project is a secular nonprofit organization located on the University of Denver campus, dedicated to the preservation and revitalization of the music and teachings of the sacred folk songs created and first sung by enslaved Africans in America during the 18th and 19th centuries. Founded in 1998 by Dr. Arthur Jones, TSP has program areas that include: Performance, Cultural Preservation, and Education. The organization has "A Choir". The organization's board members and other volunteers provide interactive presentations, recitals and sing-a-alongs for schools, community groups, senior citizen homes and private functions. Through oral history archiving, workshops and lectures, international networking, and museum installations TSP is able to preserve significant aspects of the legacy of the music. TSP offers lectures and workshops to youth and adult learners in schools and presentations in collaboration with community partners. As a multi-racial organization, TSP facilitates dialogue around inclusiveness and diversity awareness while paying tribute to a time-honored African American cultural tradition.
