The Urgency of Now!

The Pressing Issue of Food Insecurity

A silent hunger struggle persists—1 in 3 Coloradans face food insecurity, a number shockingly unchanged since 2021. And with 300 migrants arriving in Denver every day and food prices rising, food insecurity is exacerbated. Low-income residents and communities of color are hardest hit, such as our neighbors in Globevile, Elyria, and Swansea. At The GrowHaus, we're not just witnessing this challenge but we are also partnering with the communities we serve and we are taking bold action against it.

The challenge of access to healthy food leads to poor health outcomes, such as higher rates of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Most consequential, children in Globeville have a life expectancy of 11 years less than more affluent children only a few doors down.

Expanding Food Access to Meet the Growing Need

Originally serving Globeville, Elyria, and Swansea, The GrowHaus has expanded its food access program to reach Denver's diverse communities that experience food insecurity via strategic partnerships with Denver Public Libraries and Boys and Girls Club. Now reaching over 5,000 community members weekly, The GrowHaus has delivered 2.6 million meals since 2020! Looking into 2024, The GrowHaus is launching a partnership with Archway Communities and the City of Denver to provide seniors with fresh food access.

Disrupting the Root Causes of Food Insecurity

Understanding the complexities of food justice, The GrowHaus works to address the root causes of food insecurity by providing economic opportunities, leadership development, and food education programs.

Education programs support youth, adults, and families in building healthy habits through nutrition, cooking classes, Zumba classes, and home visits that build community connections.

By hiring and training members of the communities served to lead programming, The GrowHaus is creating career pathways and opportunities for building wealth. 88% of our team members are from the communities we serve, and 40% have grown into leadership positions.

An Inner Source of Strength

By Angelo Gallo, Assistant Manager of Food Access

"My name is Angelo Gallo, and my story is not just about professional growth but also about personal transformation."

My journey with food access is colored by memories from my home country, Venezuela. I witnessed families receiving food boxes with expired and substandard items. I've seen people in desperate situations with no choice but to eat expired food. My memories from Venezuela are my inspiration.

"I know the feeling of having someone look out for you when you miss food from your home country. You feel seen."

A Familiar Face

By Tania Gonzalez, Apprentice Promotora

"I wanted to be that familiar face that could offer my community resources they didn't even know existed."

I’m Tania, and I’ve been a resident of Globeville for 17 years. Eight months ago, when I became an Apprentice Promotora, I saw it as a chance to give back and connect with my neighbors on a deeper level. I wanted to be that familiar face that could offer my community resources they didn't even know existed. It's crucial for community members to be familiar with the individuals providing assistance. The impact is different when the support comes from someone you know and trust, and that's what makes my job genuinely fulfilling.

"To me, creating connections through these home visits is the most valuable experience."

Mission

Our mission is to cultivate community-driven food justice through education and food access.

Background Statement

Everyone deserves a healthy meal. Yet, in many communities there are extensive barriers to fresh food access. The GrowHaus primarily serves the Globeville and Elyria Swansea (GES) neighborhoods as well as other neighborhoods experiencing food insecurity through partnerships with Denver Public Library and Boys and Girls Clubs.

Since 2009, The GrowHaus has partnered with community members to offer fresh food access and ongoing health and wellness programming to ensure our community has the tools and resources to live nourished lives. We run various programs for kids, adults, and families to learn about growing and cooking food, as well as overall wellness.

We strive to be a community-driven organization, meaning that our goal is to have all programs led and implemented by members of our community or others from similar neighborhoods. We are successful when the youth, families, and communities we work with are empowered to feed, nourish and strengthen themselves and each other.
