Five to ten percent of people experiencing homelessness in Colorado have pets, and the pet's well-being is intertwined with the emotional and physical health of their person. This is why we are committed to caring for the lives on both ends of the leash.

During this season of giving, consider what it means to be "home for the holidays". If home is where the heart is, then every pet we treat and human we meet has a home that exists between them.

Mission

To provide free veterinary care and related services to pets of people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness.

Background Statement

The Street Dog Coalition (SDC) was started in Fort Collins, CO in 2015 when its founder, Dr. Jon Geller, acknowledged the strong bond between people experiencing homelessness and their pets. While these pets were loved and genuinely well taken of, Jon saw the need for free veterinary care to help prevent and treat disease, and to help maintain the strong human-animal bond. Although The Street Dog Coalition now has over sixty teams throughout the country, our roots remain in Colorado where we host recurring pop-up clinics in Fort Collins, Loveland, Denver, Longmont, Boulder, Colorado Springs, and Grand Junction. We also travel to rural regions of Colorado with our COHMO (Colorado One Health Mobile Outreach) Program which provides community-centered healthcare services to people and pets with limited resources/access to healthcare.

Colorado Gives Day has been one of the primary reasons we've been able to add teams and extend our reach, and we are now focused on sustaining this growth. We recognize that as we continue to grow our branches, we must strengthen our roots and lean on our community. We could not do what we do without our volunteer veterinarians and other One Health professionals as well as students, sponsors, donors, and advocates who resonate with the importance of our work.

We are also incredibly grateful for our partnership with the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Colorado State University’s Inclusive Health Collaborative that provides routine access to free veterinary and physical/mental health promotion and disease prevention services. As a result of this collaboration, we have the opportunity to work with veterinary students as well as social work students and 3rd year medical students.

In addition to volunteers, monetary and in-kind donations are also vital to our growth. Merck Animal Health and Western Veterinary Partners (WVP) have enabled us to extend our reach with their Legacy Sponsorships, committing to providing both in-kind and monetary support to SDC in perpetuity.

In 2020, The Street Dog Coalition became a Better Business Bureau® Accredited Charity Seal holder, and in 2023 we were awarded the Human Animal Bond Innovation Award in Public Service from the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI). We are also proud of our Platinum Transparency badge from Candid and our 2023 Top-Rated Charity badge from greatnonprofits.org.
