The Colorado 500 is a Colorado-based nonprofit annual charity motorcycle ride headquartered in Basalt, CO. Founded in 1975 by Wally Dallenbach and Sherm Cooper, the event began when they invited a group of professional motorcycle racers, industry leaders, and friends who shared a passion for Colorado’s high-country trails. What started as a small invitational ride quickly grew into one of the most respected charity motorcycle events in the nation, bringing hundreds of participants to Colorado each year to support local communities, tourism, and trail preservation.

From the very beginning, the founders recognized that their presence and use of the land carried responsibilities. They committed not only to safe and respectful trail use, but also to giving back to the communities that welcomed them. Out of this commitment, the Colorado 500 Charity Fund was created.

Since 1981, the Colorado 500 has awarded millions of dollars in scholarships, grants, and donations to schools, students, and community organizations across the state. More than 176 scholarships have been awarded to local students pursuing higher education, and countless community projects have been supported—from emergency services and youth programs to libraries, recreation facilities, and beyond.

Now approaching its 50th year, the Colorado 500 remains true to its original spirit: a celebration of adventure, friendship, and Colorado’s great outdoors, paired with a deep dedication to giving back. Riders and supporters alike take pride in the lasting legacy the event has created for Colorado communities and families.
