Hi! My name is Katie McDonald, and I have dedicated my senior project to increasing awareness around childhood cancer and creating something meaningful that gives back to my community. My goal is to create a banner made entirely of crocheted yellow and gold granny squares. This simple idea represents something much bigger: the belief that individual acts of kindness can come together to create a powerful impact.
Campbell Sullivan was a ski racer at Ski and Snowboard Club Vail, a student at Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy, and a warrior in her fight against childhood cancer. Known for her bubbly personality and bright light, Campbell left a lasting mark on our community. Her strength, positivity, and determination inspired me to create a project that allows others to make their own difference by donating to be part of something larger than themselves.
Each year in early April, the Campbell Cup race at Vail Mountain brings our community together to honor Campbell’s life, raise awareness for childhood cancer, and celebrate what she loved most: skiing. My mission is to have this banner completed by April 1st and displayed at the Campbell Cup as a visible symbol of support, unity, and hope. Every square will represent someone who chose to care, to give, and to stand behind children and families facing this fight.
Childhood cancer can be extremely isolating for kids and young adults in treatment. Many families must travel far from home and spend long periods in hospitals for surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Being away from friends, classmates, sports teams, and everyday routines can make it difficult for young people to stay connected and hopeful during treatment.
To help address this challenge, Campbell founded the SkiFast Foundation as a senior in high school. The foundation supports young cancer warriors by providing scholarships that help them pursue their passions and goals during and after treatment. These scholarships may support opportunities such as sports or academic camps, travel for study or competition, personal trainers, tutors, specialized programs, or even prosthetic and adaptive equipment.
All funds raised through this banner project will be donated directly to the SkiFast Foundation to support Spring 2026 childhood cancer scholarships for young warriors. These scholarships help recipients continue pursuing their passions and goals, giving them opportunities to stay connected to the activities and dreams that motivate them during and after treatment.
The goal of the SkiFast Foundation is simple but powerful: to help kids stay in the game of life and continue chasing their dreams, no matter the obstacles they face.
Campbell once said, “I might be the only one going through treatment, but I’ve seen the power of having a whole community behind my back.”
“No one fights alone.”
Through this project, I hope to bring our community together in that same spirit. By donating, contributing materials, or crocheting a square, you become part of something meaningful: turning small squares into a powerful symbol of hope, support, and community.
