I am Nancy Merrill. I have had the honor of serving as president of Colorado Crane Conservation Coalition (CCCC) since 2012.
I love cranes! They are an ancient species with amazing attributes. They dance, they mate for life, they have an amazing bugling call that carries for over a mile. They connect us with nature and our environment. They are also classified as a Species of Concern in Colorado and need our help.
Every year since its founding in 2012, CCCC has expanded its work on behalf of crane conservation. We began by presenting the annual Yampa Valley Crane Festival – a 4-day event that celebrates cranes and educates the public about the threats cranes and other birds face today. We added an on-the-ground habitat improvement program called Crops for Cranes. We now also offer crane and environmental education programs to school and community groups in Northwest Colorado. We promote crane awareness through various contests aimed at different age groups. Every spring, we operate a live-streaming nest camera focused on a crane nest in the Yampa Valley. The nest camera serves both as an educational and a scientific tool. We advocate on behalf of cranes, conduct and support habitat improvement work, and monitor the local crane population through the annual fall staging count.
Please join me in supporting the cranes and the work of the Colorado Crane Conservation Coalition (CCCC). Together, we can ensure these birds remain for future generations to enjoy.
