Move The Stairs Fundraiser

There are no coincidences.

My friend Brian Tiell, husband of Jennifer Tiell in the video above, told me about an amazing trip he took with Kidney Donor Athletes while producing a documentary. The story moved him. Here were these incredible athletes, all of whom had donated a kidney, demonstrating how little it impacted their lives, but how profoundly it impacted the lives of those waiting.

Add to that, our colleague and friend Mark McIntosh had just received a new lease on life, thanks to a kidney donor.

So Brian and his daughter, Abbey Collins, decided to create Next Step Next One (NSNO). Then Jennifer decided to donate a kidney. Then Brian decided to donate one, too.

And when Brian asked if I would become vice chair of the organization, working side by side to educate the public about living kidney donation, of course, I said yes.

Brian and Abbey have created something truly special: Kidney Convos, a unique, impressive, no-pressure program, offered live and on Zoom, where people can learn about living kidney donation and the people whose lives depend on it.

And here's where it gets really exciting.

Of the people who participate in a Kidney Convo, 8 to 9 percent sign up to take the next step toward becoming a living kidney donor.

Think about that. Nearly 1 in 10 people! That's an amazing statistic.

Now think about what that could mean to the more than 100,000 Americans waiting for a kidney.  Every day, eleven people die waiting for a kidney transplant. Eleven families lose someone they love while hoping for a call that never comes..
