Weather Update: The Heat Is Taking Its Toll 🥵
Today's outdoor temperatures climbed to 99°F, and despite every fan, frozen bottle, cooling tile, and volunteer effort we could throw at it, the temperature inside our barn reached 80°F
For rabbits, that's entering the danger zone.
🐰 70-75°F: Comfortable
⚠️ 75-80°F: Increased risk of heat stress, especially for seniors, long-haired rabbits, and those with medical conditions.
🚨 80°F+: Dangerous. Rabbits cannot sweat and rely on their ears to release heat. When temperatures continue to climb, they can quickly develop life-threatening heat stroke.
Our volunteers have been working tirelessly to keep every bunny safe, but we desperately need a permanent solution. A new mini-split AC system will provide reliable cooling during the summer and heat during the winter, protecting hundreds of rabbits for years to come.

Our rabbits are facing one of the hottest weeks of the year without reliable air conditioning, our aging cooling system has failed, leaving us without reliable climate control during one of the hottest times of the year.
Inside the shelter, temperatures are already reaching the upper 70's, creating an uncomfortable environment for both our rescued rabbits and the dedicated volunteers who care for them every day. With outdoor temperatures expected to climb well into the 90-100's this week, keeping the shelter at a safe temperature is becoming increasingly difficult and urgent repairs are needed.
Unlike people, rabbits cannot sweat to cool themselves. They rely almost entirely on their ears to regulate body temperature, making them especially vulnerable to heat stress. Once temperatures rise above 78°F, the risk of overheating increases significantly, and prolonged exposure can quickly become life-threatening, especially for our special needs rabbits.
Right now, our volunteers are doing everything they can to keep the rabbits comfortable. We rotate frozen water bottles and cooling tiles, run fans, provide fresh water around the clock, and closely monitor every rabbit throughout the day. These efforts help, but they are temporary solutions. Our rabbits need a permanent one.
That's why we're raising funds to install a split air conditioning system in the shelter.
Not only will it provide reliable cooling during the summer, but it will also serve as an efficient heat source during the winter, giving our rabbits a comfortable environment all year long.
Our goal is to raise at least $10,000, with a stretch goal of $15,000, to purchase and install the new system.
