This year, America celebrates its 250th birthday. Colorado celebrates its 150th birthday. And two girls in our CASA program celebrate their 8th birthday.
Across our nation and state, we'll commemorate milestones, reflect on history, and celebrate all that has been built over generations.
But some of the most important birthdays being celebrated this year belong to the children in our community.
Recently, twin sisters in our CASA program celebrated their 8th birthday together. Before their CASA Volunteer came into the picture, that simple idea of "celebrating together" was a big unknown.
Throughout their case, many different placements and new stresses made it hard for the girls to enjoy every day, let alone celebrate monumental events in their lives. Everyday moments that most siblings take for granted, like sharing secrets, playing games, and simply being together, were things they had to fight for.
Their CASA Volunteer knew how important their bond was, and how sad they would be if they were separated.
She fiercely advocated for the sisters throughout their case, ensuring their voices were heard and reminding everyone involved that these girls needed each other. Thanks in part to her advocacy, the sisters were kept together.
When their 8th birthday arrived, their CASA Volunteer came with a special gift: two identical dolls.
As she handed each girl her doll, she explained that the dolls were sisters, too.
It was a simple gift, but it carried a powerful message:
"You belong together. Your connection matters. You are not alone."
They hugged their dolls, compared them side by side, and celebrated turning eight and the possibility of a brighter future together.
🎂 Give today in honor of all the children and youth who will celebrate birthdays amidst family instability. Your support helps ensure kids with a CASA Volunteer have an advocate by their side through every milestone, every challenge, and every birthday. As America celebrates 250 years and Colorado celebrates 150 years, we're reminded that every birthday is a chance to celebrate hope, connection, and brighter futures we can build together.
