When I was 14, I lost my best friend, Taylor, to suicide. I quickly questioned everything and struggled with my own mental health. It was the trusted adults in my life that saved me and helped me get through. I knew I wanted to return the favor and leave a positive impact on other people’s lives. I dedicated my path to learning about the mind/mental health and logically found myself at ASP. As I finished my last semester of undergrad, I was simultaneasly accomplishing my (then) life goal of going in to middle and high schools and destigmatizing talking about mental health and suicide while sharing about my best friend through our youth education programming at ASP. As I continued my journey with this organization speaking to youth, I had teens coming up to me asking how I got through the loss of my best friend and my own struggles. My answer was simple, community. It was at this point that I knew we needed to include grief support in our programming. We recevied funding from the state during the pandemic that allowed me to launch our programming for everything that happens after a suicide occurs. We were building a web of support for suicide loss survivors in hopes that no one would fall through the cracks and then struggle themselves.
Throughout my time at ASP, I went back to school and received my Master's in Psychotherapy to further support our suicide loss survivor community. When my best friend died, she was 15 and without life insurance. We raised money for her headstone and funeral costs by making and selling bracelets. While running our grief groups and from my own experience, I recognized that community wasn’t always enough. This type of loss is one that you cannot plan for and takes a financial toll. I wanted to help survivors on a deeper level and thus, the Survivor’s Benefit Fund was created. Since it’s inception in less than a year, we’ve given around $25,000 back to our community members and supported them with financial burdens from their loss. Seeing the relief on survivors faces knowing that they are going to receive support financially and emotionally at no cost to them, is everything. Suicide loss is unlike any other type of loss. Experiencing it and watching my best friend’s family lose everything in the process was life-altering. My why with this fund is to bring a sprinkle of positive life-altering support to survivors of suicide loss. This fund has supported families in receiving free therapy, covering costs of funeral expenses, cleaning services, moving, groceries, gas, rent/mortgage payments, clothes, vet bills, car expenses, and more. Every dollar donated is supporting a family during an unimaginable time.
"You will lose someone you can't live without, and your heart will be badly broken, and the bad news is that you never completely get over the loss of your beloved. But this is also the good news. They live forever in your broken heart that doesn't seal back up. And you come through. It's like having a broken leg that never heals perfectly - that still hurts when the weather gets cold, but you learn to dance with the limp." - Anne Lamott
Help me support survivors in starting to dance again.
The Alliance for Suicide Prevention of Larimer County is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those impacted by suicide.
Colorado continues to rank among the top ten states for suicide deaths. In our community, a suicide occurs every 5–6 days — each one someone’s child, parent, partner, or friend. Behind every number is a story and a community that must respond.
For over 30 years, the Alliance for Suicide Prevention of Larimer County has been on the front lines — offering free education, outreach, and support to thousands each year. Your donations allow us to continue providing prevention education, mental health trainings, and grief support for those affected by suicide.
But the need is growing faster than the funding. Calls for help are rising, youth anxiety is at record highs, and community partners are stretched thin. To keep these lifesaving programs active and reach those who need us most, we need your support now more than ever.
Your generosity makes prevention possible. Your gift saves lives. 💜
