Conecta Arizona was born in 2020, led by journalist Maritza L. Félix, in the midst of the pandemic, when fear, misinformation, and loneliness also went viral, and an information gap affected the Hispanic community.
Today, Conecta Arizona has evolved into "the vibrant community resource" that publishes daily information for our Hispanic community amid one of the most complex and polarized scenarios they are living through. It fosters trust and remains engaged with local happenings through regular polls and ongoing dialogue. Creating genuine connections enables community members to laugh, cry, and support each other.
There are -at least!- 1.3 million Spanish speakers in Arizona who do not access trusted news, and instead rely on informal sources. These are communities that need good information more than others: to direct them to services and opportunities, to make them aware of prevalent scams and exploitation, and to help them find ways to contribute to the larger community and build a sense of belonging.
We want you to be part of this community and, with your support, make it possible:
- Continue to verify rumors, chain messages, and misinformation that directly affect migrant families, workers, students, and our abuelos.
- To delve into stories that rarely reach the mainstream media, with time and respect.
- Keeping alive the Cafecitos en el Jardín and other meeting spaces where we practice live journalism that becomes conversation, organization, and mutual care.
- Building bridges between organizations, journalists, and the community so that the border ceases to be just a scene of bad things, news, and becomes a subject of rights.
