We’d Rather Be Reporting

The Canary Report  is an advocacy journalism platform, under the umbrella of Greater Purpose Media, documenting how economic and institutional systems affect Black women and what their experiences reveal about the broader forces shaping our lives, workplaces, and communities. Our work is grounded in the Canary Effect: the understanding that those most impacted by systemic inequities can be among the earliest indicators of broader social and economic change. By listening to these voices, investigating these patterns, and connecting lived experiences to systemic trends, we gain a clearer understanding of where our systems are failing, who is being left behind, and what may be coming next.

But uncovering these stories takes time, resources, and the freedom to follow the questions that matter. As a small newsroom, every hour spent searching for funding is an hour not spent researching, investigating, interviewing, and reporting. Some of the most important stories are the ones that don’t get told because there isn’t enough time, capacity, or funding to pursue them. This Colorado Gives Day we are asking you to help us change that.

Your contribution invests in The Canary Report’s ability to do what we do best: pursue the stories that need to be told, uncover the systems behind the headlines, and bring attention to the signals we cannot afford to ignore. Your support gives our journalists more time to follow the leads, ask harder questions, and produce the independent, advocacy-driven journalism our communities need.

Help us make sure there is a journalist ready to investigate, a newsroom equipped to report, and the resources to bring these stories into the light.

Greater Purpose Media:

Honest, unapologetic, digestible media productions.

Greater Purpose Media (GPM) is a Black, woman-owned Colorado production company on a mission to tell real stories and effect meaningful change. Led by Emmy Award-winning journalist, educator, documentary filmmaker, and newsroom builder Summer D. Nettles, GPM transforms community insight into impactful journalism. We center the communities most affected by the systems we investigate, upholding rigorous standards of accuracy and fairness while advocating for justice, equity, and the dignity of every person whose story we tell.

Our Documentaries

Mandorla: A Documentary

The film, Mandorla: There’s a Way Back to Us, takes its name from the overlapping space in a Venn diagram—the place where common ground is found. Mandorla explores gun safety policies for kids and families

In partnership with Tufts University’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute we produced a documentary following 26 people—each with seemingly opposing views on gun control—as they came together to create six gun safety policies designed to protect kids and families.

Produced in the wake of yet another school shooting, this timely documentary fosters a way to hold conversations about gun policy that move us toward solutions, not division.

She Quit: Docuseries

She Quit is about black women by a black woman.

It is dedicated to highlighting the unique skills Black women bring to the work force, unearthing the inequities and racism Black women face in the workplace thatdon’t just pose an economic threat, they cause a series of measurable mental and physical health issues that lead to: low birth weight infants, high infant mortality rates, death during childbirth, obesity, hypertension, diabetes and cancer.

Our Content Creation

Greater Purpose Media produces content for syndication and in multi-media formats to maximize reach.

  • Long-form journalism (400 word written articles) delivered via newsletter to email boxes and on LinkedIn (40,000 reach)
  • Explanatory short-form videos distributed through Facebook (10,000 reach), Tik Tok and Instagram.
  • 26.45 minute podcast episodes (the average Denver metro area commute time)

Our Advocacy:

Lift Every Voice

A convening of residents, journalists, nonprofit leaders, advocates, and public officials — turning community expertise into solutions and action across Colorado.

Our Filmmaking Education Program

Greater Purpose Media teams up with schools and uses the problem-based learning model as an opportunity to educate young writers and producers. Research for our documentaries is conducted by students from eight grade and up. These students get to learn a problem thoroughly, create a presentation and see how their research is brought to life in documentary film making.

Our Vision & Values

"Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced." - James Baldwin

James Baldwin, and his commitment to unearthing, explaining and extolling truth, is the light that guides Greater Purpose Media as we chart our course.

Your support helps Greater Purpose Media create media that reflects people’s lived experiences, challenges the systems that shape their lives, and advances the conversations that lead to meaningful change.
