Today, August 16, 2026, our daughter, Soprano, would have turned 22 years old.
Soprano would have recently graduated with her degree in Political Science from CSU and would be making a positive impact on her community.
The Soprano Turner Foundation Fund was created to ensure that our daughter has a lasting legacy by continuing the work and causes that mattered to her. The fund is designed to give perpetually to nonprofit organizations that reflect Soprano’s values and her passion for social justice.
Ever year on Soprano’s birthday, we will award grants in her name. This giving will continue long after Shawna and I are gone. The more we are able to grow the fund, the greater Soprano’s impact can be—not just today, but for generations to come.
This year, in honor of Soprano’s 22nd birthday, we are donating $1,000 each to Crossroads Safehouse & Services and The Iris Center.
At just 20 years old, Soprano served on the Board of Directors at Crossroads Safehouse & Services, an organization that has provided shelter, outreach, advocacy, and prevention services in the Fort Collins community for 45 years. Crossroads provides trauma-informed care and critical support to victims and survivors of domestic violence through its 24/7 crisis line and emergency shelter, advocacy, legal services, housing programs, prevention and education, and youth and bilingual advocacy.
Crossroads aspires to create a future without domestic violence, not simply by responding to those in crisis, but by working toward prevention and reducing the number of people who experience domestic violence in the first place. That was something Soprano felt very strongly about.
The Iris Center was founded by two healthcare professionals, Dr. Stacie L. Johns and Casey Cash, FNP, who wanted to create a different model of care, one where providers have the time to truly listen to and care for their patients without many of the limitations of the traditional healthcare system.
Through its Community Sustained Care model, The Iris Center connects people with healthcare, resources, and community to improve physical, mental, and environmental well-being. Their vision is simple and powerful: “A world where every person has agency over their whole health.”
They also believe healthcare should be a safe space for every identity, everybody, and every story.
That, too, was something our daughter felt very strongly about.
Soprano only had 20 years to make her mark on this world. We intend to make sure her impact lasts much longer.

On June 27th 2025, our lives were shattered when our daughter, Soprano, died in a hit and run car crash. Not only did we lose our only child, but our best friend, favorite human, and purpose in life.
Our daughter was the best human we have ever known. She was incredibly smart, articulate, empathetic, competitive, passionate, and creative. She was a social justice warrior that fiercely defended the humanitarian rights of the people & causes she loved. She spoke truth to power and hated bullies. We are so proud to be her parents.
Soprano was entering her senior year at CSU, majoring in political science. At the age of 20 she sat on the Board of Directors at Crossroads Safehouse. Business owners, government officials, teachers, and nonprofit leaders were among her peers. Her thoughts and ideas were respected, valued, and praised. She was a bright light in this world. Her future was unlimited.
To ensure her legacy of advocacy and continue her work that was tragically cut short, we have created The Soprano Turner Foundation to support the nonprofits our daughter held dear. The Soprano Turner Foundation will commit its resources to LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights, the prevention of domestic violence, mental health resources, BIPOC, and many other community and critical causes Soprano supported and believed in.
