Swish! The puck glides across the ice, scraped by the crisp scrrrtch of blades carving sharp turns. Clack! A stick slaps the puck, sending it zipping with a whirr toward the goal. Thud! Players crash into the boards, their shoulder pads crunching against the glass. Swack! A wrist shot rockets the puck, met by the goalie’s glove with a thwap. Skates shh-shh rhythmically, while sticks tap-tap the ice, signaling for a pass. Bam! A body check rattles the rink, followed by the whistle’s shrill tweet halting play. Whoosh! Cold air rushes past as players sprint, their breaths puffing huff-huff in the frosty arena.
Paul O'Neil brought this exciting sport to SW Colorado before our organization was born. His advocacy inspired our sheet of ice and in 2002 the Durango Area Youth Hockey Assoc. was created.
We serve over 160 boys and girls ranging in age from 4 to 18 years, not including Durango High School players, and we are experiencing continued growth.
Our Hockey Director, Lou Tocco, has improved our ability to provide exceptional coaching, leadership and fun for our athletes as our teams become more competitive.
Our program has a strong history of winning championships. Just this winter our 12A team won their Western Colorado Hockey League playoffs and continued on to win the State Championships! Two years ago the Durango High School hockey team, players who went through our program, won the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) 4A State Championships.
Let's keep the momentum going...
