In late summer 2025 a group of United Women in Faith and I went to the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site and learned about the tragic history there. Then later I learned that soldiers who participated in the Wounded Knee Massacre in South Dakota would retain their medals of honor. I felt the need to do something that would tell indigenous people's story, to preserve American History, and in a way, provide some support to the indigenous community. Several friends and I are doing our own thing to raise funds for the Denver Indian Center which for 50 years has supported and empowered American Indian youth, elders and families through promoting self determination and economic, mental and physical health. My friends and I will collect pledges for activities we do such as clean our office, walk/run so many miles, read books, etc. I'm part of a group that has organized some book discussions on Sand Creek and growing native. I am hoping my friends in United Women in Faith and beyond will see the value of the work that the Denver Indian Center provides. I hope we preserve and learn from the history of these events as well as from the rich culture of Native Americans.
