For many years, LGCS offered only a limited secondary education program with grades 6-8 in a combined classroom. This meant that students in grades 6, 7, and 8 were taught in the same room, often receiving the same content, and without the benefit of specialized teachers.  These limitations were primarily due to the size of the building, the small enrollment numbers for those grades, and the lack of capacity to staff secondary education adequately.

The current building, constructed in 2012, retained the same footprint as the previous one per the requirements of the funding entity. This requirement pre-empted our desire to plan for potential growth or community requests for more comprehensive secondary education options. Since 2021, LGCS has been actively exploring ways to better serve the community, particularly in terms of secondary education for grades 6 through 12.

Historically, students have left LGCS after the 5th grade. Most commonly,  families made this choice so that their children could integrate with other secondary students before high school as well as to have access to sports and extracurricular activities.

In response to these challenges, LGCS is developing plans to enhance our secondary education program to retain more students in grades 6 through 12. This includes transportation options for sports, extracurricular activities, and concurrent enrollment opportunities, ensuring that our students have access to a well-rounded educational experience while remaining a part of the LGCS community.

As of Fall 2025 we have over 70 students enrolled in our secondary program (middle and high school).  We have 2 temporary modular buildings, which adds 4 classrooms.  These modular buildings are on the elementary basketball court and have limited the play space for the younger students.  They are not currently hooked up to water and septic, so all students and staff are using the indoor facilities.

In the coming years, as students progress to the next grade we will be needing more space and appropriate facilities to adequately serve our growing population.  Staff, students and parents were surveyed in 2025 and over 75% of respondents want to see a new building to house our secondary program. We are currently authorized by Park RE-2 district and they have control over our property and any improvements or additions.  Therefore to serve the community we need to raise funds to match Colorado's BEST grant, and to secure property to house the future Secondary School of Lake George Charter.
