As a staff member at the Clyfford Still Museum, I’m proud to work for a museum that is uniquely Denver, reflecting the city’s creative spirit: welcoming, innovative, and deeply connected to its community.
Since opening in 2011, the Still has aimed to make abstract art accessible to everyone. Through exhibitions and programs co-created with artists, educators, children, scholars, and community members, the Museum continues to challenge the idea that art should only be interpreted by experts. Central to this work is our collaboration with young people. Our 2022 exhibition, 'Clyfford Still, Art, and the Young Mind'—co-curated with children from six months to eight years old—helped redefine how museums can share authority with their youngest community members.
That spirit lives on in our current exhibition, “Tell Clyfford I Said ‘Hi’”: An Exhibition Curated by Children of the Colville Confederated Tribes. Installed throughout all nine galleries, it features the perspectives of Colville youth—some of whom are descendants of individuals Still portrayed in his art—and explores six themes they identified: Family & Culture, Connection, Imagination, The Outside, Love, and Paint & Color. The exhibition is complemented by public programs like Reflections on Collaboration, a behind-the-scenes discussion with Colville partners, and Art as Autonomy, a hands-on workshop led by Colville artist Frank Andrews.
Through initiatives like inStill School Experiences for PreK–12 students and Art Crawl or babies and caregivers, the Still continues to foster welcoming spaces for everyone. Partnerships with local schools—including a multi-intensive autism classroom at Denver’s Eagleton Elementary—help us create more inclusive museum experiences.
When you give to the Still this Colorado Gives Day, you support a civic treasure that enhances Colorado’s creative capital. Every gift made before December 9 will be boosted through Colorado Gives, increasing its impact and helping The Still remain a uniquely Denver place where creativity, curiosity, and community belong to everyone.
