Diane Smith's Fundraiser for the Tabor Opera House

As you know Brad and I spend a great deal of time in Colorado.  We have a house outside of Leadville.  I have become very involved with a non-profit here (surprise, surprise) and want to share why I am spending my time and treasure here.  

One of the first things that got my attention during our first summer here was the Tabor Opera House.  There was a show there and we attended.  The building was amazing and my love of history drew me to it immediately.  It was still owned by a local couple and the fact that it was still operating at its age and in private hands was extraordinary.  

Soon after, I read about an effort by a group of citizens to acquire it and restore it.  Long story short, since we came to Leadville almost 17 years ago, it has been acquired by the City of Leadville and the Foundation created to operate and restore it is in full operation with an extraordinary staff and a Board comprised of wonderful people from all over Colorado, Texas and beyond.  

I serve on the Development Committe and bring VIRGINIA to the party.All of that said, it is a very old building and restoring it is a long and complicated process that requires hours of volunteer time and many dollars.  We also have to fund the operating budget.  There is a challenge match in the amount of $70,000 as you see below.  

I am excited about meeting that challenge and I hope that my friends and family will join in this very worthwhile effort that combines my love of theater and history AND remember we have plenty of room and you are always welcome, Summer or Winter!

• The Tabor Opera House has been deemed a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. 
• We have arrived at a pivotal moment in the building's 144-year history, and we need the support of those near and far to help us protect, preserve, and reactivate this piece of Colorado's history.
• Donations of $250 or more are eligible for an additional 25% State of CO income tax credit through our Enterprise Zone Status!
• Finishing the Exterior Wall Restoration 2024 includes:
  • Restoration of the Storefront of the building, Windows & Cornice
  • Restoration of the wood balcony 
  • Restoration of the Upper Cornice
