Hello all! My name is Sophie Shea, and I am a Policy Analyst at Colorado Fiscal Institute (CFI). At CFI, our mission is to advocate for economic equity and advance anti-racism through fighting for a fair tax code that holds wealthy Coloradans responsible for paying their fair share. We also believe that the state should use the revenue that it collects to invest in our communities, which includes funding education, expanding housing accessibility, protecting our environment, and uplifting working people. We do this work through conducting research, organizing with partners across the state and the country, connecting with communities to share presentations and educational resources, and working with lawmakers to inform the decision-making process.

For too long, working Coloradans have paid more in taxes as a proportion of income than higher income earners––meaning that lower-income earners actually have a higher effective tax rate than wealthier income earners. While woking Coloradans are bearing this unjust burden, K-12 public schools continue to be underfunded, and Colorado teachers continue to receive the lowest starting pay in the nation––just to name one example of the many ways that the state is underfunded, despite the fact that Colorado as a whole is a comparatively wealthy US State.
