Improve our democracy by helping voters make election decisions based on policy preferences instead

$950

raised by 7 people

$60,000 goal

We're creating a quiz template that newsrooms can use to match voters with candidates based on policy preferences on significant issues.

Local news outlets would determine what issues are most important to candidates — for school board, city council, county offices, legislature, Congress — as well as potential solutions to those issues to come up with the quiz.

This might involve listening sessions with the community, audience surveys, input from outgoing elected officials and community leaders, general knowledge of news staff and/or existing polling.

Once the questions and potential solutions are developed, candidates would be surveyed. In addition to choosing from the multiple choice options, they’d be allowed 150 words to explain their position.

Voters would be matched with the candidate with the most similar views, as well as shown responses from other candidates.

We'll pilot the program in November, and invite donors to a debrief session with developer Evan Wyloge, project coordinator Sandra Fish and some participants.

After iterating, we'll roll out a 2026 framework at journalism conferences, via webinars and other outreach.

NOTE:  We're working with the Colorado News Collaborative (COLab) to create our project and work with Colorado news organizations to implement it. COLab is also acting as our fiscal sponsor for this work. It's a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working with newsrooms like ours across the state to strengthen local public-service journalism.
